What’s New
The Certified Medical Coder (CMC) course and exam are updated annually using current CPT®, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM coding manuals. General coding and chapter-specific guidelines are updated with explanations and guidance for proper use, including E/M code and documentation changes.
What’s Required
Self-supplied CPT®, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM code set manuals and a medical dictionary are required throughout the course and on the exam day. The American Medical Association (AMA) version of CPT® is highly recommended for this program. Current year code set manuals are essential for accurate code selection. Candidates should take PMI’s free 20-question online assessment to measure baseline knowledge @ www.pmiMD.com/areyouready. Registrants should also complete PMI supplemental courses, included with enrollment, before session 1: Step-by-Step Coding Guide and Medical Terminology.
What’s Included
This instructor-led course includes a robust course manual of learning materials with hundreds of coding exercises, a practice exam, and certification examination preparation handbook. The timed, proctored certification exam is included in the course fee and scheduled on the final class session. A score of 70% or better is required. If a passing grade is not achieved on the first attempt, candidates may re-test for an additional fee.
Having a Certified Medical Coder in the office who is on top of these changes helps to keep the office in compliance and the money coming into the office. I like to look at the average days in AR for a provider’s claims. If claims are not being paid, it is often due to inaccurate coding.
