Charlotte Mowris Memorial Award History: Charlotte Mowris was a Rochester philanthropist who dedicated her life to helping others in need. She particularly liked supporting medical students at the University of Rochester. Over her long life, many physicians benefitted from her generosity. In addition to her love of medical education, she also supported students in the Fine and Applied Arts Department at the Rochester Institute of Technology. This Scholarship was endowed at the passing of Mrs. Mowris’ daughter Ann Mulligan in 2016. Ann was also a philanthropist with many of the same interests as her mother. Amount of Scholarship: The intent of the award is to provide repayment of loans in the amount equal to the most recent annual tuition cost for a 4th year U of R medical student. The amount is not guaranteed and will depend on available funds. The award must be applied toward repayment of medical school loans held by recognized lending institutions such as federally insured banks and credit unions. Eligibility Criteria: The scholarship will be granted to a graduating 4th year U of R medical student or LECOM student who matches and will be staying in the metro-Rochester area for residency in primary care. These would include Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Pediatrics, OB-Gyn, or a Medicine/Pediatrics program. Only students with a minimum of $50,000 in loans will be considered. Morton, MD Memorial Scholarship History: Mrs. Ruth Ireland Morton and family members created this scholarship at Rochester Area Community Foundation (RACF) to recognize the accomplishments of her husband, Dr. John H. Morton, and his father, Dr. John J. Morton. Dr. John J. Morton was the first Chairman of Surgery at the new University of Rochester (U of R) Medical School when it was founded about 1925. Following in his father’s footsteps, Dr. John H. Morton was known for his kind, skillful, and conscientious service to surgical patients, medical students, and the medical profession. Eligibility Criteria: Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating or recent graduate (within the year) U of R Medical School or Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) student who has matched in a surgical or surgical sub-specialty residency; plans to focus on patient care rather than clinical research, administration or other medical pursuits; is committed to community service; and has financial need based on loan indebtedness. Scholarship Fund Application for First Year Medical Students
History: The Committee is awarding one new scholarship this year to a first year medical student who has demonstrated financial need, scholastic ability, and been admitted to an accredited medical school in the United States (or) Canada. Scholarship students are usually, but not always, selected from the entering (freshman) class. Usually, one student is chosen each academic year. Scholarship aid is continued for the student’s four (4) years of medical school, provided funds are available and academic performance is satisfactory.
Priority for student selection: Selection process will include, but not be limited to, the following considerations (with 1 having the highest priority):

Edward T. Mulligan MD Memorial Award
History: Edward T. Mulligan, MD was a revered Rochester surgeon whose career was shortened by his untimely death in 1975. The Medical Scholarship Fund of the Monroe County Medical Society administers the Edward T. Mulligan, MD Memorial Award for a graduating fourth year University of Rochester medical student. Provided there are adequate funds available and qualified applicants, the Committee usually awards one (1) Mulligan Award each year. The amount of the Award varies from year to year. The Award is specifically for repayment of educational loans already incurred by the student.
Eligibility Criteria: The Award will be granted to a graduating fourth year University of Rochester medical student or Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) student who will be staying in the metro-Rochester area for residency. Only those students who "match" for residency in the metro-Rochester area will be eligible. Students must demonstrate financial need and scholastic ability.
